Parakeet Personalities

Right now I have six parakeets, three males and three females. I love watching my own, home grown soap opera. For critters with a brain about the size of a pea, these little guys are chock full of personality.

Megan is now the matriarch of the group. She's very smart and a super good flyer. I once saw her fly from swing to swing. Not an easy thing to do. Her mate right now is Skyler, who is very devoted to her. She's the oldest bird I've had and now sadly has arthritis. She seemed to get from an accident when she got her foot caugt in a cloth toy. I went to help her, but she got scared and yanked her toe out. The arthritis developed soon after that. She seems to have it in her wings too a little.

Megan, is a slightly darker shade of blue than Chloe was. For a while I got them mixed up, but Megan has a brown cere (nostril area) and Chloes’ was white, plus Chloe had grown to be much bigger. Megan is a small mischievous, boy crazy female. She used to love to chase the boys and pull on their tails. Perhaps for that reason she was not that favored by the males for a while, although Clifford had a short dalliance with her too. Sometimes she seems sad by this lack of attention, but for the most part she has fun playing with all the toys in the cage. One very funny thing about Megan is that she is a very curious bird, but she's still scared of new things. It's funny to watch her crane her head to look at something while her body is backing away.

I got Peri in February 2016. He's very friendly. He loves swings and is a very good flier. He has a very sunny disposition. When I first put him in the cage he excitedly checked out all of the toys and then went up to each of the birds to check them out. Mitzi was his first mate, but he liked Megan as well. Now he's with Missy.

I missed Scotty so much I got a new light blue bird I named Skyler. He's turning out to be a very sweet bird. Unfortuantely he's a little bit timid.

Peri and Violet

- Taylor and Chipper -

I got Missy because she seemed calm and friendly, but since I've gotten her she's become the alpha female and takes no nonsense from anyone, plus she's a little afraid of me. Not my ideal bird but she has grown to be very pretty. Lately she's appears to be suffering from Candida. Another bird, Benny, seemed to get it the same time she did, but he died from it and she got better. Now she seems to be suffering from it again. Don't know how they got it. I've been putting apple cider vinegar in the water, which helped her get over it last time, but only seems to be helping a little this time.

I got Lucy the same day that Mitzi died. I had seen her earlier and thought she was pretty so I rushed over to PetsMart to get her. I didn't want Peri to be without a female for long. But she pushed everyone away at first. So Peri turned to Missy. Later Lucy regretted this and was interested in Skyler, but he still loves Megan. In the meantime, when Missy doesn't feel like cannodaling, Peri visits Lucy. Crazy soap operas.

Pepe is very sweet and loves to talk and sing, but he doesn't replace Benny. He's not interested in me. Mostly he tries to woo Lucy and Missy who don't seem interested in him. Lately Lucy even fights with him. Don't know why. He gets along well with Perry, and they seem to have a bromance going on. Then again, Perry seems to get along with everyone these days.
